Meet the Operations Director of Abu Dhabi’s favourite retail destination

Located at the heart of the dynamic Yas Island, Yas Mall first opened its doors to an eagerly awaiting public on November 19, 2014. Since then, the biggest mall in Abu Dhabi has been a favoured gateway experiential shopping destination, offering an unparalleled retail experience and fun day out to local residents, tourists and international guests alike.

With three floors of leading retail and restaurant brands, a 20-screen state-of-the-art cinema, and several action-driven family entertainment zones, the 2.5 million square foot sprawling complex never quite goes to sleep.

Going behind the scenes for a one-on-one with Yas Mall’s very own Director of Operations, Engineer Mohammad Al Awadhi, we were able to better appreciate how a multifaceted structure of this scale is run so efficiently, seemingly without a ‘glitch’ in sight.

With three floors of leading retail and restaurant brands, a 20-screen state-of-the-art cinema, and several action-driven family entertainment zones, the 2.5 million square foot sprawling complex never quite goes to sleep.

Going behind the scenes for a one-on-one with Yas Mall’s very own Director of Operations, Engineer Mohamad Al-Awadhi, we were able to better appreciate how a multifaceted structure of this scale is run so efficiently, seemingly without a ‘glitch’ in sight.

Elaborating on the incredibly intricate technical and navigation systems put in place, Al Awadhi revealed that the mall’s vibrant atmosphere, a source of delight to its thousands of visitors, is in fact exponentially magnified behind closed doors. “There is a complete crew of more than 430 staff everyday working behind the scenes, whose task is to conduct different kinds of activities from cleaning to maintenance and security, round the clock seven days a week. The number is even bigger during weekends and public holidays to accommodate for the increased numbers of visitors to the mall,” Al Awadhi explains.

“Some people think that the mall closes after trading hours… in fact, all the ‘action’ starts after we close mall doors, when all maintenance personnel and contractors are allowed to conduct their tasks up until the first few hours of the morning, as we prepare to open our doors to the public once more,” he adds.

With more than 18 years of experience in operations, Al Awadhi’s genuine passion for his line of work shines through as he discusses the joys of his occupation and unbridled willingness to jump in and get his hands dirty, resolving any incidents as soon as they arise. A master multi-tasker, he revels in the dynamic nature of his position.

“What I really like most about my job is the diversity of the activities and constant interaction between the various entities on Yas Island… The main responsibility of operations is to make sure an organization is running as best as it possibly can, with a smooth efficient service that meets the expectations and needs of all customers and clients.” For this reason, he encourages all people who see these qualities in themselves, to pursue their own career in the field.

Next time you happen to find yourself headed to Yas Mall, keep an eye out for Al Awadhi somewhere on Yas Island – perhaps winding down from all the action as he cruises around in a stunning selection from his classic car collection.
