Did you know that Yas Island is home to the 3rd fittest team on earth? We speak to one member about fun, fitness and working on Yas Island!

While many may know Yas Island for its world-class attractions, headline concerts and international events, a growing number of people know the island for its growing sports and fitness credentials.

Fueling this fitness cred is Vogue Fitness CrossFit Yas. Located in the bustling Yas Marina, Vogue Fitness is first and only CrossFit gym on Yas Island, and the home base of the 2016 Reebok CrossFit Games’ 3rd fittest team on earth – the only UAE team to ever make it to the global competition, let alone secure a podium finish.

Reflecting back on 2016 and looking ahead to the 2017 CrossFit Open, we spoke to one member of the 6-person team, 25-year-old New Zealander Jamie Greene. A fitness force in her own right, the Reebok-sponsored athlete claimed top spot in the international women’s category of the 2016 CrossFit Open – the qualifying competition for the regional and global competitions. We spoke to Jamie about fitness, fun, what it’s like working on Yas Island as well as her plans for the 2017 edition of the CrossFit Games.

  1. How long have you been working on Yas Island and how did you get the job?

I’ve been working 2 years now and started off as a member at Vogue Fitness actually. After moving to the UAE for better opportunities and for something different, I was a personal trainer in Abu Dhabi with a variety of clients which was great but meant travelling a lot throughout the day which was not ideal. After becoming a member, I soon started coaching at Vogue.

  2. Can you tell me about your main responsibilities as a CrossFit Coach and Trainer?

Day to day we coach about three to four classes a day and then work with a variety of clients for personal training, helping them to achieve their personal fitness and nutrition goals which can range from weight loss to training for competitions.

  3. What’s the best part about your job?

The people who I work with are pretty cool, the other coaches and staff at Vogue are all great, and good fun. Its also great to get to work with so many different members each day. The gym has a lot of general members and also a popular ladies-only gym so we get to interact with so many people each and every day.

  4. What was it like representing Yas Island and Abu Dhabi globally at the 2016 CrossFit Games?

It was very cool competing and placing 3rd on a global level. So many people here didn’t know about CrossFit before we grew the gym, so it was great getting people behind us, both expats and local Emiratis. It was cool because it opens the door for possibly a team of Emiratis in future global competitions.

  5. What was your training like before the 2016 CrossFit Games?

We ramped our our team training right before we left in our outdoor gym located at Yas Marina. We also trained at Yas Marina Circuit during their Train Yas nights, cycling on the circuit. Once in the USA for the competition, it was more fine tuning, resting and preparing.

  6. What are you currently working towards?

Right now, we’re training for a fitness competition in Dubai and beyond that, we’ll be looking towards the 2017 CrossFit Open which starts in February. This year, I’ll be competing as an individual so I’m preparing for, and looking forward to that.

  7. What would surprise people about your job?

I think some people may think that we just show up and coach but a lot of work goes into what we do. We’re always taking courses, learning and always looking at ways we can improve our programmes for our clients and tailor what we do to meet their goals.

  8. What would you say to someone wanting to get fitter but doesn’t know where to start?

Come in to Vogue Fitness we’ll help you from there. We have beginner classes and and we’re there to teach you from the start regardless of your current fitness level.

  1. What’s your favorite memory of working on Yas Island so far?

Before we had the outdoor area of Vogue at Yas Marina, we did classes right on the Marina which was really great given the backdrop. Also the Member Throwdowns which we host are really fun as they allow people to just hang out at Yas Marina and watch the competition. It’s a great atmosphere.

  2. What’s your favorite thing to do on Yas Island when you’re not working?

I’d have to say Yas Beach definitely – it’s very relaxing.
